T20 will be top choice soon: Chandrashekhar

Mumbai: Backing the Indian Premier League's staging on foreign soil, former cricketer VB Chandrashekhar said on Friday that the popularity of the shortest version of cricket was an indication that it will overshadow Tests in future.

"Twenty20 tournaments have been the most sought after by youngsters in the cricketing world and the day is not far off for it to take the top spot amongst the three versions of the game," Chandrashekhar said.

Chandrashekhar, who is the Cricket Manager of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), said IPL overseas would be a boon for the youngsters who have never played abroad.

"It is a good move in the sense of providing a chance for the young Indian players on their maiden trip to play abroad in a tournament of this status.

"The tournament will truly go international in the years to come. Considering the success of the tournament in South Africa, the BCCI and the IPL Management will have the opportunity of holding the event, at least in the alternative event (once in two years), in other foreign countries," he said.

About the possibility of CSK, who were one of the finallists last year, considering the pitch and weather conditions and crowd support in South Africa, Chandrashekhar said the team was excited about the prospect of playing in SA.

"The players will be excited with the new experience that they are going to face. I am talking about the state-level Indian cricketers who form part of the teams," Chandrashekhar said. "Having the experienced players like Albie (Morkel) and (Makhaya) Ntini who have been part of the team and doing quite well and (Matthew) Hayden and (Andrew) Flintoff in the team will make the youngsters more and more adaptable to the conditions there. These overseas players' passing on their experiences to these youngsters would make them stronger to face up to the demanding situations," he added.

Chandrashekhar said pitches in South Africa would assist pacers but spinners could play instrumental role in winning matches.
